Pregnancy Pilates and Birth Preparation – a strong foundation for pregnancy and childbirth

Being pregnant is one of life's truly special journeys. The body changes week by week, the mind fills with anticipation, and for many, the question arises: How can I best prepare for the birth and the time afterwards?

Most people are familiar with birth preparation, where the focus is often on knowledge about the stages of birth, breathing exercises, and mental tools to handle contractions and pain. At the same time, more and more pregnant women choose to engage in exercise as support during pregnancy – and here, pregnancy Pilates in a classic studio has become one of the most popular forms.

Many think that they must choose between pregnancy exercise and birth preparation, but in reality, the two complement each other beautifully.

My own journey with pregnant women

I have been fortunate to follow many women through their pregnancy and into motherhood – and it is undoubtedly one of the most rewarding parts of my work.
Recently, I followed my best friend, who began my pregnancy program already in week 14 and trained with me right up until week 40. I got the chance to be part of her pregnancy, birth, and now also her postpartum journey. Seeing her move strongly and confidently through the significant changes in her body and then meet motherhood with a body already ready to heal and get stronger again — it touched me deeply.

I experience the same thing again and again with the many pregnant women I meet in the studio. Women who come with back or pelvic pain often find more comfort and fewer issues throughout the program. I almost never see larger rectus diastasis (separation of the abdominal muscles) with them, and after birth, they typically have a stronger body and an easier rehabilitation.

Helping women through pregnancy — and seeing them go from being pregnant to becoming mothers — is one of the most beautiful aspects of my work.

What is Pregnancy Pilates?

Pregnancy Pilates is based on Joseph Pilates’ original exercises but is carefully adapted to the pregnant body. With me, we train in small groups, where there is room for individual guidance and security.

We especially work on:

  • strengthening the pelvic floor and deep abdominal muscles

  • relieving the back and hips

  • increasing flexibility, stability, and body control

  • providing calm and presence in the body

The training is gentle but surprisingly effective. It often helps to reduce issues such as lower back pain, pelvic problems, and tension. At the same time, it gives you a strong physical foundation that makes it easier to start rehabilitation after the birth.

What is birth preparation?

Birth preparation is about creating security and mental calmness ahead of birth. Here, you gain knowledge about the stages of birth, learn to use breathing and relaxation to handle contractions and pain, and you and your partner get concrete tools on how you can work together during the birth.

It doesn't strengthen the body in the same way as exercise, but it provides you with mental techniques and understanding that can make the birth experience calmer and more secure.

Why combine the two?

It's not a question of choosing one over the other — Pilates and birth preparation perfectly complement each other.

  • Pilates makes the body stronger, more stable, and more aware.

  • Birth preparation provides you with mental tools, knowledge, and security.

When you combine them, you create a foundation where both body and mind are ready for the big day — and for the time as a new mom.

I repeatedly see how women who have practiced Pilates throughout their pregnancy face the birth with calmness and strength. They often experience fewer issues along the way and an easier road back to their body afterwards.

A loving investment in yourself and your baby

Preparing for birth is not just about the birthday itself. It's about creating the best conditions throughout the entire pregnancy and into motherhood.

Pregnancy Pilates provides you with strength, stability, and calm in your body. Birth preparation gives you insight, mental techniques, and security. Together, they create an experience where you feel strong, prepared, and supported — both during pregnancy, through birth, and in the first time as a mother.
